Avonia
(Pelargoniums of the Münster Botanical Garden: inside the collection).

Pelargoniums of the Münster Botanical Garden: inside the collection
Nowadays, when most of what we read about plants comes to us on a screen, it is especially enjoyable to hold a real glossy specialist journal in one’s hands, beautifully printed and filled with large photographs and substantial articles. It is the kind of publication one wants not only to leaf through while admiring the photographs, but also to sit down and read at leisure. Avonia is just such a journal. It is published by the German society Fachgesellschaft andere Sukkulenten e. V. (FGaS). The journal appears four times a year, each issue has 84 pages, and all articles are published in both German and English.
The second issue of Avonia for 2026 is a special one for me. It includes my article “Pelargoniums of the Münster Botanical Garden: inside the collection”. The Botanical Garden of the University of Münster houses one of Germany’s largest scientific collections of Pelargonium species, comprising around 230 taxa. Most of the collection is kept in research greenhouses and serves not merely as a plant display, but as working material for scientific research.
The article is based on our visit to Münster in January 2015 and is devoted in large part to Joachim Röschenbleck, a German scientist and botanist who specialized in the systematics and phylogeny of the genus Pelargonium. He guided us through the research greenhouses and spoke in detail about the organization of the collection, the plants it contained, and his own scientific work. The publication marks the tenth anniversary of his death.
I am not yet able to publish the complete article here, as material from recent issues of Avonia may not be made freely available online for a certain period. The photographs shown here therefore include only the opening pages of the article in its German and English versions.
Readers living outside Germany can also receive this beautifully produced and informative journal. To do so, they need to become members of FGaS. The membership application for international members and further information are available on the society’s website: https://www.fgas-sukkulenten.de/en/membership.html
